Kabul Launches Standard City Address System with 185 New Street Signs

DID Press: Kabul’s municipality says it has installed 185 large street guide signs across 12 districts of the capital as part of a wider plan to introduce a standardized city addressing system, with installation in secondary streets now accelerating.

According to municipal officials, the new signs have been placed along key routes, including Deh-e Bagh, Shahr-e Naw, and the Darulaman Road corridor. Work is continuing in neighborhoods and side streets, and the project has reportedly been fully implemented in 11 districts so far.

Nematullah Barakzai, a municipal official, said a second phase will add roughly 75 additional large signs along main and secondary roads. He noted that the system is expected to significantly reduce confusion for motorists, taxi drivers, and travelers arriving from the provinces.

The municipality also said that new addresses are being registered and integrated into Google Maps to enable digital navigation for residents and visitors. Under current planning, districts 1, 2, 17, 11, and 8 are scheduled for formal address assignment in 2025, with other areas to follow.

For years, the absence of formal street addresses has been cited as a major challenge for Kabul residents. Authorities say they hope the new program will streamline navigation, improve urban services, and make the capital easier to traverse.
