US Actions Pushing World to Brink of Int’l Law Collapse, Sachs Warns
DID Press: Jeffrey Sachs, a US economist and public policy analyst, says the UN Security Council must act after the United States’ operation in Venezuela to prevent a collapse of international law, warning that humanity may not survive a new era of chaos in a nuclear age.

The UN was created after humanity endured the devastating losses of the First and Second World Wars, he recalled.
“Given that we are in the nuclear age, failure cannot be repeated,” Sachs said. “Humanity would be destroyed. There will be no third opportunity to fulfill the responsibilities under the UN Charter.”
According to Sachs, the Charter prohibits the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state. “The Security Council must decide whether this prohibition will be preserved or abandoned,” he added. “Abandoning it would have the gravest consequences.”
“Over the past year, the United States has carried out bombing operations in seven countries — none authorized by the UN Security Council and none conducted within the framework of lawful self-defense under the Charter,” Sachs continued. The targeted countries, he said, included Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Somalia, Syria, Yemen and now Venezuela.
In the past month, President Donald Trump issued direct threats against six UN member states, including Colombia, Denmark, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria and Venezuela, he added.
