Herat Emerges as Afghanistan’s New Economic Hub

DID Press: Herat has solidified its position as one of Afghanistan’s leading economic centers with the launch of 350 new manufacturing plants in the province’s industrial zone In 2025.

Herat, a major city in western Afghanistan near the Iranian and Turkmen borders, has undergone significant industrial growth in recent years. With support from the Taliban government — including reduced tariffs, streamlined business licensing, and provision of raw materials — the city has become an attractive destination for both domestic and foreign investors.

“Economic progress in Herat is the result of supportive policies and simplified administrative procedures, accelerating production and creating employment opportunities,” said Mohammad Yousuf Saeedi, spokesperson for the Taliban-appointed governor of Herat, adding that these industrial developments could help Afghanistan take major steps toward economic independence.

Herat’s strategic location enhances its role as a trade and transit hub. Infrastructure projects, such as the Khaf-Herat railway, and border crossings with Iran and Turkmenistan, further position the city as a key node for regional commerce and economic cooperation.
