Following Border Closure with Pakistan: Iran’s Exports to Afghanistan Rise via Mahirud Customs
DID Press: Following the closure of Afghanistan’s trade borders with Pakistan, the Sheikh Abu Nasr Farahi (Mahirud) Customs in Iran’s Sistan and Baluchestan Province has witnessed a significant boost in trade exchanges and exports to Afghanistan.

As Afghanistan’s commercial routes with Pakistan were shut down, Iran’s exports to Afghanistan through the Mahirud customs crossing have seen a marked upward trend. This shift has created a new opportunity for Iran to expand its role as one of Afghanistan’s main regional trading partners.
According to official reports, after restrictions were imposed at Pakistan’s borders, Mahirud Customs has become one of the primary corridors for exporting Iranian goods to Afghanistan. This increase has been particularly notable in sectors such as food products, construction materials, and automotive spare parts.
Officials at Mahirud Customs say that infrastructure at the crossing is continuously being upgraded to facilitate and speed up export and import procedures. They add that the change in trade routes has enabled Iran not only to strengthen its economic relations with Afghanistan but also to secure a stronger position in regional trade competition.
