Turkey-Saudi Mediation Fails to Ease Afghanistan-Pakistan Tensions

DID Press: Efforts by Turkey and Saudi Arabia to mediate and reduce border and security tensions between the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan have ended without results.

Diplomatic sources report that mediation efforts hosted by Turkey and Saudi Arabia reached a deadlock. Over the past months, Turkey hosted multiple rounds of talks between Taliban delegations and Pakistani officials, but Ankara decided to halt the process due to lack of progress and deep disagreements between the sides.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia attempted to facilitate dispute resolution through meetings in Riyadh. According to sources close to the Taliban, these talks yielded no tangible outcomes and were abruptly stopped.

In recent months, border tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan have sharply increased, with both sides accusing each other of supporting armed groups and terrorist activities, further deepening mutual distrust.

Pakistan previously labeled Afghanistan as a base for terrorist groups and claimed that much of last year’s attacks were carried out by Afghan nationals. The Taliban rejected these allegations, calling them “provocative” and “irresponsible.”
