China expresses interest in investing in Afghanistan’s coal-fired power generation

DID Press: Chinese investors have expressed readiness to invest in coal-based power generation projects in Afghanistan, according to Taliban officials.

The Taliban said a delegation of Chinese investors raised the proposal during a meeting with the head of Afghanistan’s state power utility, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), signaling interest in developing electricity production using coal.

Such investment could help meet part of Afghanistan’s electricity demand, as the country currently imports around 80% of its power from neighbouring states.

The development comes amid ongoing security concerns for foreign projects in Afghanistan. Recently, a Chinese national was killed in an explosion at a Chinese restaurant in Kabul.

Following the incident, China called for stronger protection of its citizens and projects in Afghanistan. Despite these concerns, Beijing has continued to signal interest in investing in the country’s energy sector.
