Trump Under Pressure: EU Demands Apology Over NATO Remarks

DID Press: US President Donald Trump has come under pressure from European allies over his remarks minimizing the role of non-American NATO forces in the Afghanistan war. Earlier, Trump claimed in a Fox News interview that NATO troops “were slightly behind the front lines,” sparking sharp criticism from leaders across the continent.

In response, Trump sought to ease tensions, praising the bravery of British troops on his social media platform, Truth Social, writing, “The great and very brave soldiers of the United Kingdom will always stand with the United States.” This statement followed stern reactions from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who labeled Trump’s comments “insulting and alarming,” and similar criticism from Italian, Polish, French, and Danish officials highlighting NATO contributions and sacrifices.

The White House defended Trump, noting that the United States has borne the largest share of costs and responsibilities within NATO. The incident underscores continuing transatlantic tensions and the sensitivity surrounding the recognition of allied contributions in U.S.-led military operations.
