UN Warns Pakistan Crackdown Pushing Afghan Refugees Into Economic Distress
DID Press: UNHCR says tightened restrictions by Pakistan on Afghan refugees have plunged thousands of families into acute economic hardship and heightened the risk of detention and forced deportation.

In its latest monthly report, UNHCR said Afghan refugees in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, as well as surrounding areas including Attock, have faced a surge in arrests, repeated checks, harassment and forced removals.
The report notes that new restrictions have curtailed access to jobs and basic services, leaving many families struggling to cover daily expenses, housing and children’s education.
UNHCR also said the transfer of management of refugee-related infrastructure and services in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to local authorities has disrupted humanitarian operations, potentially undermining access to education, healthcare and safe drinking water.
The agency warned that continued pressure will further increase refugees’ vulnerability and called for urgent, coordinated international support.
