ASEAN Expresses Deep Regret Over Israeli, US Attacks on Iran

DID Press: The foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on Wednesday (March 4) issued a statement describing the Israeli and United States attacks on Iran as “regrettable” and voiced serious concern over escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The statement, released by ASEAN under the rotating chairmanship of the Philippines, noted that the escalation occurred despite ongoing diplomatic efforts — including mediation initiatives by Oman — aimed at achieving a negotiated solution.

ASEAN foreign ministers stressed the importance of respecting international law and called on all countries to adhere to the United Nations Charter and resolve disputes through peaceful means. They also emphasized the urgent need for an immediate cessation of hostilities and maximum restraint by all parties to prevent further escalation.

The statement further underscored the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states in accordance with international law and affirmed that parties to armed conflicts are obligated to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure.

ASEAN also reaffirmed its collective commitment to providing emergency assistance to citizens of its member states, particularly under the current circumstances.
