Khalilzad Urges Taliban to Restore Education for Afghan Girls and Women

DID Press: On International Women’s Day, former US peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad called on the Taliban government to allow Afghan girls and women to return to schools and universities.

In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), Khalilzad congratulated women worldwide and urged Taliban authorities to permit secondary school and university access for girls and women.

Simultaneously, the UN Women Afghanistan highlighted ongoing restrictions, noting that many public spaces previously used for social interaction are now closed to women and girls, a situation the organization said should not be normalized.

UN Women emphasized that meaningful change is still possible if the international community stands with Afghan women.

Currently, education for girls above grade six and university access for women remain banned in Afghanistan, a restriction drawing widespread concern from international rights groups.
