DID Press: Fu Cong, permanent representative of China to the United Nations, has expressed disappointment over the failure to adopt a draft ceasefire resolution on the Middle East at the United Nations Security Council.

Speaking after the vote, Fu said the draft resolution submitted by Russia reaffirmed the principles and objectives of the United Nations Charter. The proposal called on all parties to immediately halt military operations, condemned attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, and urged all sides to return to diplomatic negotiations.
Fu noted that China welcomed and supported the proposal and regretted that it failed to pass.
The Security Council voted on two draft resolutions related to the ongoing military conflict in the Middle East. The Russian-backed proposal called for an immediate halt to military operations in the region and elsewhere to prevent further escalation.
It also condemned attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure and urged all parties to comply with their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law, to protect civilians and civilian facilities.
The draft resolution failed to pass after receiving four votes in favor, two against, and nine abstentions. Russia, China, Pakistan, and Somalia voted in favor, while the United States and Latvia voted against it.
