US Public Support for Iran War Hits Historic Low

DID Press: A recent comparative chart released by Western media highlights shifts in American public support for military interventions during the “early days” of major conflicts over the past century. The data show that the 2026 war in Iran has received the lowest public backing of any major U.S. military engagement.

World War II tops the chart with 97% early support, followed by the 2001 Afghanistan War at 92% and the 1991 Gulf War at 82%. Other operations, including in Panama, Iraq, and Korea, saw initial support levels between 75–80%. Limited interventions such as Kosovo (1999), Grenada (1983), and Libya (2011) registered support between 47–58%.

By contrast, the Iran conflict in 2026 has only 41% public support—reflecting a deep gap between the U.S. government and its citizens regarding involvement in a new Middle East war. Analysts suggest this low backing is influenced by costly past experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan and growing concerns over the economic and security consequences of another large-scale conflict.
