Pakistan Warns UN of Rising Terror Threat, Backs UNAMA Role in Afghanistan Stability
DID Press: UNSC on Monday unanimously approved a three-month extension of the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), with support from all 15 members, including Pakistan.

Speaking at the session, Usman Jadoon said UNAMA plays a key role in promoting “peace, security and stability” in Afghanistan, which he described as facing challenges including terrorism, human rights concerns, narcotics, and declining humanitarian aid.
Jadoon also warned of an “exponential rise” in terrorism originating from Afghan territory, calling it the most serious security threat. He alleged that some elements within the Taliban are cooperating with or enabling groups such as Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, Balochistan Liberation Army, Islamic State Khorasan Province, Al-Qaeda and East Turkestan Islamic Movement.
He said these groups operate with impunity and are responsible for cross-border attacks targeting civilians, security forces and critical infrastructure inside Pakistan.
Referring to the resolution, Jadoon noted that the Security Council expressed concern over the continued activity of terrorist groups posing a threat to international peace and security, and called on the Taliban to take “active, immediate, tangible and concrete” steps to counter terrorism.
He also stressed the need for secure management of weapons and ammunition to prevent them from falling into the hands of militant groups.
Jadoon highlighted UNAMA’s role in monitoring and analyzing the security situation, addressing illicit economic activities, preventing arms trafficking and supporting refugee returns.
He further warned that “misinformation” from some local Taliban elements has hindered UNAMA’s access in parts of the country.
He concluded by expressing hope that the three-month extension would allow for a reassessment of UNAMA’s mandate, enabling it to operate more effectively toward lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan in coordination with neighboring countries.
