Mattis: US Faces Tough Standoff with Iran

DID Press: Former US Defense Secretary James Mattis warned that Washington is in a difficult position with Iran, as regional tensions—especially in the Strait of Hormuz—continue to escalate. Speaking at the Saravik Energy Forum on Monday, Mattis said the current U.S. approach lacks a clear strategy, leaving policymakers with limited options.

He highlighted unprecedented disruptions in oil supply and uncertainty in energy sector planning, stressing: “We’re in a tough spot, and I can’t see many good options.” Mattis emphasized that the situation demands precise strategic decisions, noting that the absence of a clear U.S. policy affects both regional security and global energy markets.

The former Pentagon chief’s remarks come amid growing geopolitical risks in the Gulf, with the Strait of Hormuz—a critical oil transit route—at the center of heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran.
