Taliban Release American Detainee in Diplomatic Gesture

DID Press: Government of Taliban has released an American detainee, marking another step toward improving diplomatic relations with regional and global partners. The decision followed a request from the prisoner’s family and came after high-level meetings involving U.S., Emirati, and Afghan officials in Kabul.

The detainee, identified as Dennis Coyle, had been held in Taliban custody for an extended period before being freed after diplomatic engagement and humanitarian appeals from his relatives.

According to officials, Amir Khan Muttaqi approved the release after receiving a letter from Coyle’s mother requesting clemency ahead of the upcoming Eid al-Fitr. The Taliban’s Supreme Court reportedly determined that the time already served was sufficient, leading to the decision to release him.

During discussions on the case, former U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad, Saif Al Ketbi, and a member of Coyle’s family met with Muttaqi to coordinate efforts surrounding the detainee’s release.

Muttaqi stated that the Taliban do not detain foreign nationals for political purposes, asserting that arrests are carried out under legal procedures and that releases are granted once judicial processes are completed. He described the move as a humanitarian gesture reflecting respect for human rights principles.

The Taliban foreign minister also expressed gratitude to the government of the United Arab Emirates, particularly to Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, for playing a constructive role in facilitating the release. He further acknowledged the contribution of Qatar in supporting communication and information exchange between Taliban authorities and the detainee’s family.

The release of Dennis Coyle is widely viewed as part of the Taliban’s broader effort to strengthen international engagement and improve its global standing amid ongoing diplomatic challenges.
