DID Press: Friedrich Merz sharply criticized the approach of Donald Trump toward tensions with Iran, calling it a driver of “dangerously escalating conflict.”

Speaking at a conference in Frankfurt, Merz argued that current U.S. actions do not reduce the crisis but instead risk “widespread escalation with unpredictable consequences.” He warned that such a trajectory could threaten not only the directly involved parties but global stability as well.
The German chancellor also expressed skepticism about the feasibility of regime change in Iran, stating, “If the goal is truly regime change, I doubt it will succeed, as such attempts have historically failed.”
Merz drew parallels with past U.S. interventions, particularly the war in Afghanistan, highlighting that regime-change strategies have often been unsuccessful. He further questioned whether a clear and implementable strategy exists, cautioning that the absence of a defined plan could prolong or even prevent achieving intended objectives.
His comments come amid ongoing domestic and international criticism of U.S. policies toward Afghanistan, especially following the withdrawal of American forces.
