Deadly Attack in Injil Highlights Pattern of Recent Civilian Targeting in Herat

DID Press: Following a recent armed attack in the Injil district of Herat province that left dozens of civilians dead and wounded, Noor Ahmad Islam Jar stated that the perpetrators have been “firmly identified” and will soon be brought to justice. He stressed that no negligence will be tolerated in the investigation and that security agencies are actively working to arrest those responsible.

However, an examination of independent sources indicates that the Injil attack did not occur in isolation, but is part of a series of targeted assaults against civilians in Herat in recent months.

In the Gozara area of Herat, which is predominantly inhabited by the Hazara and Shia community, multiple armed attacks have been reported.

In one incident, six members of the Shia community—including two religious scholars, women, and children—were killed by unidentified armed men. In another, two Shia clerics were shot by motorbike gunmen in the Jibril area.

In a separate attack in the Mohammadia area of Gozara district, a gunman opened fire on Shia worshippers, killing five people, including a woman and a child. The attacker’s identity remains unknown, and no group has claimed responsibility.

While there is no official information on the motive behind the Injil attack, reporting sources highlight several recurring patterns in recent incidents:

  • No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, yet victims often belong to a specific community.
  • In most cases, attackers used motorcycles or light weapons and fled before security forces arrived—a pattern repeated across multiple incidents.
  • Analysts suggest the absence of claims may indicate either a complex operational structure or locally driven violence.

Despite the Herat governor’s promise of swift arrests, no official details regarding the identity or motive of the attackers have been released. However, analysis of similar incidents indicates a growing pattern of targeted violence against civilians in Herat, raising serious security and social concerns.
