Afghanistan Expands Gas Output in Yatimtaq Field with New Wells

DID Press: Ministry of Mines and Petroleum announced that, following the completion of new wells in the Yatimtaq gas field in Jawzjan province, production capacity has significantly increased and is expected to reach 125,000 cubic meters per day. The project is part of the country’s broader energy development program, implemented in cooperation with a Turkish company.

The ministry stated that the development process at the Yatimtaq gas field has entered its final stage. With the operation of newly drilled wells, daily gas output is set to reach 125,000 cubic meters over a 24-hour period.

A spokesperson for the ministry said the Director General of Hydrocarbons inspected the site and emphasized accelerating technical work and completing the project according to schedule, issuing necessary guidance to technical teams.

According to official information, a contract worth $7.5 million has been signed with a Turkish company for drilling two new wells at Yatimtaq. Drilling, testing, and installation of auxiliary facilities are currently underway.

Officials said the increase in gas production in Jawzjan could play an important role in meeting domestic energy needs, reducing reliance on imports, and supporting small and medium-sized industries in northern Afghanistan. They added that expanding gas fields remains a key priority for generating sustainable revenue and promoting economic growth.

The ministry also noted that upon completion of ongoing projects, the distribution network for liquefied and industrial gas will be expanded to neighboring provinces.

Energy experts believe that investment in Afghanistan’s gas sector, if managed transparently and with proper planning, could become a major source of national revenue.
