Herat Jewelers Launch Strike After Deadly Attack in Injil District

DID Press: A deadly armed attack in Injil District that left 11 people dead has triggered a wave of protests and business closures among merchants in Herat.

Local sources in Herat reported that the attack occurred on Friday in a predominantly Shia-populated area of Injil District, resulting in the deaths of at least 11 individuals. According to local authorities under the administration of the Taliban, the victims were civilians, although further details about their identities have not yet been released.

In response to the incident, a number of jewelers and market traders in Herat closed their shops on Saturday, staging a strike to protest the deteriorating security situation.

Witnesses stated that the strike gained support from other merchants in parts of the market, affecting the broader commercial atmosphere across the city.

So far, no individual or group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, some residents of Herat, citing a history of similar incidents, have expressed concern about the potential recurrence of such violence and called for sustainable security measures, particularly for religious minorities.

Several citizens told media outlets that the continuation of such insecurity could increase public distrust and harm economic activity in the city. They urged authorities to adopt decisive and transparent measures to identify those responsible and prevent similar incidents in the future.
