DID Press: Canada will reduce its long-standing dependence on United States for military spending and procurement, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Saturday. He said the government will instead strengthen domestic industry and expand international partnerships.

Speaking at the Liberal Party’s national convention in Montreal, Carney told delegates: “The days when our military sent 70 cents of every dollar to the United States are over.” His remarks were met with applause.
He emphasized economic sovereignty and national unity, outlining government plans to prioritize Canadian-made materials and labor in future defense projects.
The Canadian prime minister also pointed to growing trade tensions with Washington, including tariffs imposed during the presidency of Donald Trump, which he described as a major and immediate economic challenge.
