Taliban Make Burqa Compulsory for Women in Kandahar

DID Press: Taliban’s Department for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice has made burqa mandatory for women in Kandahar province, and prohibited shopkeepers from selling goods to women who do not comply, reported local sources.

Officials reportedly instructed shopkeepers in certain districts of the city to sell products only to women wearing a traditional “chador” Burqa. Sources said acting Taliban authorities warned that shops violating this directive will be closed.

Since taking control of Afghanistan, Taliban caretaker government has imposed strict restrictions on women’s public presence, and this new directive marks a further tightening of social controls.
