Internet Shutdown in Balkh Causes Major Disruptions to Banking System

DID Press: suspension of Wi-Fi services in five Afghanistan provinces, including Balkh, has triggered serious problems in the banking and financial sector. In response, Taliban’s provincial governor in Balkh has exempted banks from internet restrictions.

Local sources reported that the recent curbs on Wi-Fi access, imposed since Monday across five provinces, have severely disrupted banking and financial services.

Yusuf Wafa, Taliban-appointed governor of Balkh, directed that banks be excluded from the restrictions after witnessing disruptions in the financial system, instructing authorities to provide them with necessary connectivity to continue operations.

The shutdown has raised deep concerns among citizens and business leaders, with experts warning that prolonged restrictions can inflict long-term damage on Afghanistan’s economy and daily life.

Beyond banking services, the internet suspension has also disrupted economic activities, online education, and digital communications across affected regions.
