Poll: Afghanistan People Strongly Oppose US Return to Bagram Air Base

DID Press: An overwhelming majority of respondents view U.S. president’s Donald Trump’s remarks on retaking Bagram Air Base as an act of interference and a violation of Afghanistan’s sovereignty.

According to a new online poll conducted by DID Press, 72 percent of participants said a potential U.S. move to reclaim Bagram would constitute “unacceptable interference in Afghanistan’s internal affairs.” This response underscores strong public sensitivity toward any form of foreign military presence or return to Afghanistan territory.

By contrast, only 7 percent of respondents described such a move as “a positive step for U.S. and regional security.”

Meanwhile, 13 percent considered Trump’s remarks “symbolic and impractical,” arguing that domestic and international constraints make the fulfillment of such promises highly unlikely.

Another 7 percent said they were indifferent or had no opinion on the matter.

Analysis of Results
Sovereignty as a Priority – High rate of opposition (72 percent) highlights Afghanistan public’s emphasis on independence and self-determination. The two decades of U.S. military presence and its human and social costs have reinforced this perspective.

A Security-Oriented Minority – A small segment (7 percent) still perceives a U.S. return as a security guarantee, but this view remains marginal compared to the overwhelming opposition.

Skepticism About Feasibility – The significant share of respondents (13 percent) who dismiss Trump’s statements as largely rhetorical suggests that many view them as serving domestic or campaign purposes rather than practical policy.

Conclusion
DID Press Agency poll indicates that Donald Trump’s comments on retaking Bagram Air Base have met with broad rejection among the Afghanistan public. The findings reaffirm that any proposal for the return of foreign forces to Afghanistan is likely to provoke strong social resistance and a negative response from majority of citizens.
