Taliban Reject US Return to Bagram, Support Reopening of US Embassy in Kabul

DID Press: Taliban government spokesperson, speaking to Sky News, rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to reclaim Bagram Air Base, saying that Afghanistan people will never allow their land to be handed over to foreigners. At the same time, he expressed the Taliban’s willingness to resume diplomatic relations with the United States.

Zabiullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesperson, confirmed in an interview that Trump’s suggestion to retake Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan has been firmly rejected. He emphasized, “Afghans will never allow their land to be handed over to anyone under any circumstances.”

Mujahid further announced that the Taliban are engaged in discussions with the United States regarding the reopening of embassies, saying, “We have reviewed this matter and are willing for embassies to reopen both in Kabul and Washington.”

Regarding international recognition of the Taliban government, Mujahid said, “It is not only Russia that has openly recognized the Taliban government; several other countries have done so as well, although it has not yet been publicly announced.”

On the issue of women’s education restrictions, he added, “I cannot make a promise on this matter.” No plans were provided to reopen secondary schools for girls or to allow women access to higher education.

In response to questions about the recent 48-hour internet blackout in the country, Mujahid said, “We have not received any official notification from the Ministry of Communications, so we cannot comment on this matter.” Meanwhile, an internet service provider confirmed that the shutdown was carried out on the orders of the Taliban leadership.

On the economic situation, Mujahid stated that Afghanistan now enjoys “relative stability and increased security,” though statistics indicate that 90 percent of children under the age of five face food insecurity.
