Trump Threatens Spain with Sanctions over NATO Spending Dispute

DID Press: US President Donald Trump warned that Washington may impose trade sanctions on Spain, accusing Madrid of failing to meet its NATO defense spending commitments and showing “disrespect” toward the alliance.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said he was “very dissatisfied” with Spain’s defense contributions, claiming it remains the only NATO member that has not raised its military spending to five percent of GDP. “Spain has shown an unbelievable level of disrespect to NATO,” he said.

Trump added that his administration is considering “certain trade measures” against Spain as leverage to push for increased defense funding and compliance with NATO obligations.

The remarks come amid growing tension between Washington and several European allies over defense burden-sharing. Trump has repeatedly urged NATO members to contribute more toward collective security.

Analysts warn that the threat of trade sanctions could strain economic and diplomatic relations between the United States and Spain.
