UN SG: Gaza Resolution Supports Ceasefire

DID Press: UN Secretary-General António Guterres said the Security Council’s latest resolution on Gaza help reinforce the ceasefire, as the territory still face humanitarian crisis.

Guterres described the decision as an “important step” toward consolidating a truce.

The resolution has drawn criticism from some quarters. Craig Mokhiber, former director of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights office in New York, called the vote “shameful” and a moral failure for the UN. Writing on X (formerly Twitter), he said that “none of the Security Council members had the courage or principles to stand up to the colonial project of the U.S. and Israel. Today marks one of the most shameful days in UN history.”

Senior Hamas leader Osama Hamdan also strongly condemned the U.S.-proposed resolution, describing it as aligned with Israeli interests and aimed at imposing trusteeship over the Palestinian population. Hamdan said the plan violates international law, ignores the root cause of the conflict—occupation—and warned it would eliminate any possibility of an independent Palestinian state.
