Global Reactions Mount to US Offensive in Venezuela

DID Press: International reactions to the U.S. military action against Venezuela continue to build, with governments and political blocs taking sharply different positions.

Russia, Iran, Cuba, Colombia, Belarus, Brazil, and Chile condemned the U.S. strikes. Officials in Minsk recalled earlier remarks by President Alexander Lukashenko, who warned that the United States could face a “second Vietnam” in Venezuela.

Argentina and Poland welcomed the reported detention of Nicolás Maduro.

The United Nations has not yet issued a statement. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell urged the United States to show restraint, while reiterating that the European Union does not recognize Maduro as Venezuela’s legitimate president.
