UN Launches Digital Learning Hubs to Empower Afghan Girls in Kabul Schools

DID Press: UN Development Programme (UNDP) launched “Digital Corners” in schools in Kabul’s Istalif and Mosahi districts, expanding access to basic digital education—particularly for girls.

These in-school hubs provide computers, internet access, tailored curricula, and trained instructors, delivering hands-on digital learning directly within the classroom environment. The initiative was implemented in November and December 2025 under the Solar Energy for Schools in Afghanistan (SESEHA) project, with a strong emphasis on female teachers and training in core computer skills, internet use, and online safety.

In Istalif, 20 students enrolled in the program, including 11 with no prior digital experience who achieved strong results after a two-month course. Twelve teachers also participated, with six selected for advanced training to independently continue the program.

At Mosahi school, 41 students took part, with 27 achieving high scores in final assessments. Nine out of 11 participating teachers demonstrated strong digital teaching capacity and readiness to sustain the initiative.

UNDP reported strong student interest, with classes exceeding capacity, underscoring growing demand for expanded digital hubs and better-equipped computer labs. Officials said sustained investment could help modernize Afghanistan’s education system and prepare youth—especially girls—for success in the digital era.

In January, the digital hub equipment was formally handed over to school administrators, who pledged to use the facilities strictly for educational purposes.
