UNSC Holds Special Session on Afghanistan

DID Press: United Nations Security Council will convene a special meeting today, Monday, March 9, to review the latest political, security, and humanitarian developments in Afghanistan.

According to the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), the session will begin at 3:00 p.m. US Eastern Time. Georgette Gagnon, acting head of UNAMA and Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General, will present a report on the current situation in the country.

Representatives from several regional countries are also expected to attend, discussing issues related to peace, security, and humanitarian challenges in Afghanistan.

Key topics on the agenda include human rights—particularly the situation of women and girls—economic conditions, security issues, and regional roles in ongoing developments.

The report comes amid heightened UN attention to restrictions on access to justice and civil rights, including limitations on women’s access to judicial and legal services.
