HRW: Israel Used White Phosphorus Over Residential Areas in Southern Lebanon
DID Press: Human Rights Watch has reported that the Israel Defense Forces used white phosphorus munitions over residential areas in the city of Yahmar in southern Lebanon last week, a move that could have severe consequences for civilians.

According to HRW, on March 3, 2026, the Israeli military fired artillery shells containing white phosphorus above homes in Yahmar. The New York-based rights organization reviewed seven images that geographically confirm explosions of white phosphorus over residential zones. The images also show civil defense teams extinguishing fires at at least two homes and one vehicle.
In response, the Israeli military stated it has no current knowledge of using white phosphorus in Lebanon as reported. The military emphasized that its policy prohibits the use of such munitions in populated areas, though HRW notes that “exceptions” have occurred.
White phosphorus ignites upon contact with oxygen, often used to create smoke screens or illuminate battlefields. However, it can function as an incendiary weapon, causing fires, severe burns, respiratory damage, organ failure, and even death.
Ramzi Qais, a Lebanese researcher with HRW, called the alleged use of white phosphorus over residential neighborhoods “extremely concerning”, warning of serious risks for civilians.
This incident follows previous accusations last month that Israel sprayed the herbicide glyphosate along the Lebanese border, an act Joseph Aoun, Lebanon’s president, described as an “environmental crime.”
