UNICEF Urges Afghanistan to Reopen Schools for Girls at Start of 2026 Academic Year
DID Press: UNICEF called on Afghanistan to reopen girls’ schools, warning that prolonged restrictions on education threaten their future, On Thursday (March 26), coinciding with the start of the 2026 academic year.

Sanjay Wijesekera, UNICEF Regional Director for South Asia, said in a post on X (formerly Twitter): “Afghan girls have waited too long, and reopening schools must restore hope for all. The time to open school doors has come, as hope, dignity, and the future begin with education.”
UNICEF has repeatedly emphasized that education is a fundamental right and a cornerstone for children’s future and long-term societal development. International organizations have also warned that extended deprivation of education can have lasting impacts on girls’ health, security, and future employment opportunities.
Since the return of the Taliban to power, girls have been barred from secondary schools and universities, leaving a generation of young women without formal education. Restrictions extend beyond classrooms, with many women still facing employment limitations in government institutions, NGOs, and other sectors, exacerbating household challenges.
Aid groups note that the combined impact of restrictions on schooling, higher education, and employment has not only infringed on women’s rights but also weakened Afghanistan’s social and economic recovery.
