EU Reduces Reliance on Washington Amid Trump’s Unpredictable Policies

DID Press: Relations between US and EU have reached a point of no easy return, according to Arab News. Analysts say that Donald Trump’s second term has shaken long-standing Western alliances, which had underpinned the global order for decades, through pressures and unpredictable policies.

European governments—from London and Berlin to Paris and Madrid—are openly preparing for a future with minimal dependence on Washington. Key elements of this strategy include expanding independent defense capabilities, diversifying energy sources, and strengthening trade relations outside U.S. influence.

Experts argue that years of unilateral tariffs, repeated threats, and erratic diplomacy by Trump have made this strategic shift inevitable.

Statistics confirm the trend: favorable views of the U.S. in Germany have dropped from 49% to 33%, while in Poland—a former staunch U.S. ally—they have fallen from 77% to 55%.

European leaders have increasingly criticized Washington openly. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz have directly challenged Trump, a development experts interpret as the beginning of a historic rift in Europe-U.S. relations.

Europe appears unwilling to wait for the end of Trump’s term and is actively redefining its role in the global order, a move that could shape international politics and economics for decades to come.
