12 Countries Condemn Israel’s Appointment of Envoy to Somaliland

DID Press: A group of 12 countries, including Pakistan, strongly condemned Israel’s decision to appoint a diplomatic representative to the Somaliland, describing it as a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty.

In a joint statement issued on Saturday, the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Somalia, Sudan, Libya, Bangladesh, Algeria, Palestine, Türkiye, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Kuwait said the move constitutes a “clear violation of the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.”

The statement emphasized that the signatory countries categorically reject any unilateral actions that undermine national unity or infringe upon state sovereignty. They reiterated their full support for Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and legitimate institutions as the sole representative of its people.

The countries also warned that such actions violate international law, the United Nations Charter, and the African Union’s founding principles, and could set a dangerous precedent threatening stability in the Horn of Africa.

The statement comes after Israel appointed Michael Lotem as its first non-resident ambassador to Somaliland earlier in the week.

Previously, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation also condemned the move and reaffirmed its support for Somalia’s territorial integrity.
