Pakistan Urges SCO to Press Taliban on Counterterrorism Commitments

DID Press: Pakistan has urged the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to press the Taliban authorities to fulfill their counterterrorism commitments, arguing that lasting regional peace and economic development depend on addressing security threats it says originate from Afghanistan.

Speaking at the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers meeting, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, called on the organization to encourage the Taliban to meet their international obligations in combating terrorism. He said sustainable peace, stability, and economic progress in the region would not be possible without eliminating cross-border militant threats that Pakistan attributes to Afghan territory.

Dar also described the SCO as a key platform for strengthening regional cooperation since its establishment, highlighting its role in promoting peace, security, economic connectivity, and cultural ties among member states.
