At Least 30 Protesters Reportedly Killed in Pakistan-Administered Kashmir

DID Press: At least 30 unarmed protesters have reportedly been killed during a security crackdown in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, according to local protest organizers, as demonstrations demanding political and electoral reforms intensified across the region.

The Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) said Pakistani security forces opened fire on tens of thousands of demonstrators on Monday, killing 25 people. The group said another five protesters were killed on Tuesday in the city of Mirpur, bringing the reported death toll to at least 30.

The protests, which began in June, have focused on demands for electoral reform, expanded political and economic rights, and a reduction in the political influence of reserved seats allocated to migrants from Indian-administered Kashmir.

According to JAAC spokesperson S.A. Khan, security forces removed victims’ bodies from the scene and hospitals following the shootings in Mirpur in an alleged attempt to conceal evidence. The claims have not been independently verified.

The Pakistani government has rejected the allegations. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the demonstrations were being organized with “financial support and direction” from India, an accusation that has not been substantiated publicly.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International has called on Pakistani authorities to lift communication restrictions and restore internet access in the region, expressing concern over the ongoing crackdown on protesters.

The demonstrations have continued for nearly a year, with protesters maintaining demands for political reforms, greater civil rights, and improved economic conditions.
