Gunmen Attack Home of Taliban Army Chief in Badakhshan

DID Press: The home of Fasihuddin Fetrat, the Taliban’s army chief of staff, was targeted in an armed attack in Warduj district of northeastern Badakhshan province on Thursday evening, according to local sources.

The sources said unidentified gunmen opened fire on Fetrat’s home in the village of Astrup from a nearby mountain, using both light and heavy weapons, including PK machine guns.Guards at the residence returned fire, triggering a brief exchange between the two sides.

The attackers later withdrew from the area and fled, according to the sources.There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

It was also unclear whether Fetrat was at the residence when the attack took place.The incident comes as Badakhshan has witnessed heightened tensions and clashes between the Taliban and anti-Taliban groups in recent weeks. Fighting has been reported in several parts of the province following the reported capture of Taftal-e Payin district by the Sipah-e Mihan group and attacks by the Afghanistan Freedom Front on Taliban positions in Zebak.

Fetrat traveled to Badakhshan after tensions escalated and has been overseeing Taliban operations against opposition groups, according to local sources.In recent days, the Taliban’s provincial information and culture official in Badakhshan was also killed in an armed attack.

Local sources say the security situation in the province remains tense, with the Taliban deploying additional forces to the area.
