Taliban Seeks Uzbekistan’s Support to Upgrade Power Sector Technical Capacity

DID Press: Afghanistan’s national power utility has requested Uzbekistan’s assistance in strengthening the technical capacity of the country’s electricity sector, including the adoption of international standards, laboratory modernization and specialized training for technical staff.

Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat said that its Executive Director, Mullah Abdul Haq Hamkar, held talks on Saturday, August 1, with Akmal Jumanazarov, head of Uzbekistan’s Technical Regulation Agency under the Council of Ministers, seeking cooperation to improve Afghanistan’s electricity infrastructure.

The two sides discussed implementing international technical standards, upgrading testing laboratories, calibrating equipment according to global standards, and establishing mobile laboratories to help identify and resolve technical problems in the power network more efficiently.

Uzbekistan’s Technical Regulation Agency expressed readiness to cooperate with Afghanistan in technical fields and standardization efforts.

The meeting also emphasized expanding long-term cooperation, exchanging technical expertise, applying international standards and improving the quality and reliability of Afghanistan’s electricity sector.

Afghanistan remains heavily dependent on imported electricity due to limited domestic generation capacity, with more than 75 percent of its electricity supply imported from neighboring countries, mainly Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.
