Afghan Opposition Leaders: Taliban Faces Resistance at Home, Abroad

DID Press: Two prominent Afghan opposition figures have argued that the Taliban is facing mounting challenges from both domestic resistance and international scrutiny, warning against efforts to normalize relations with the group.

In an interview with a foreign media outlet, Yasin Zia, leader of the Afghanistan Freedom Front, said his group’s recent operation in Zebak district of Badakhshan demonstrated that the Taliban’s claim of having eliminated all armed resistance does not reflect the reality on the ground.

Zia said organized resistance remains possible inside Afghanistan and stressed that the Freedom Front’s ultimate objective is to end the conflict and restore popular sovereignty through elections and the rule of law. He also rejected ethnic interpretations of the conflict, arguing that victims of Taliban rule come from all of Afghanistan’s ethnic communities. Zia called on anti-Taliban groups to unite around shared principles, including ending Taliban rule, preserving Afghanistan’s territorial integrity, protecting women’s rights, and establishing an accountable political system, warning that fragmentation among opposition groups would only benefit the Taliban.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Massoud and French lawmaker Aurélien Pradié wrote in the French newspaper Le Monde urging the European Union not to normalize relations with the Taliban or cooperate in the deportation of Afghan asylum seekers.

The authors warned that sharing information on Afghan asylum seekers with the Taliban could endanger political opponents, journalists, and women’s rights activists. They argued that granting diplomatic concessions without meaningful changes in Taliban policies would reinforce the perception that repressive governments can eventually secure international legitimacy.

Massoud and Pradié concluded that the Afghan people have not surrendered to Taliban rule and urged Europe to support those advocating for freedom, civil rights, and democratic governance rather than legitimizing the Taliban.
