Afghanistan Remains Among World’s Low-Income Economies
DID Press: Afghanistan remains classified as a low-income economy in the World Bank’s latest income classification for fiscal year 2027, with no indication that the country has moved into a higher income group.

The World Bank divides the world’s economies into four categories based on gross national income (GNI) per capita: low-income, lower-middle-income, upper-middle-income and high-income economies.
Under the latest classification, Afghanistan remains in the low-income category and is not among the countries that moved into a higher income group during the latest assessment period.
The World Bank said economies whose per-capita income increased sufficiently were moved to higher income categories. Togo, for example, advanced from the low-income group to lower-middle-income status, while Jordan, Micronesia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Vietnam moved into the upper-middle-income category.
For fiscal year 2027, economies with a GNI per capita of $1,175 or less are classified as low-income economies.
