IRGC Captures US Unmanned Submarine in Strait of Hormuz

DID Press: Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy has announced the capture of a U.S. smart, unmanned submarine at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. officials have acknowledged the loss of the underwater vehicle but said the drone had malfunctioned before the incident, a claim that has raised questions.

The IRGC Navy said it had identified, stopped and seized a U.S. Navy unmanned underwater vehicle at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, describing it as a “trophy.”

According to Iranian media reports, the vessel was identified during a maritime reconnaissance and surveillance operation and was taken into Iranian custody. IRGC officials described it as an advanced unmanned system designed for reconnaissance, surveillance and underwater missions.

U.S. officials, meanwhile, acknowledged the loss of the underwater drone but said it had suffered a technical malfunction more than a day earlier and did not contain sensitive equipment or classified information.

However, the U.S. account regarding the malfunction does not diminish the significance of the incident from Iran’s perspective. If the reported identification, tracking and seizure of the system are confirmed, the capture of a U.S. Navy underwater vehicle at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz could have significant intelligence and security implications.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most strategically important waterways and a major route for the transportation of a significant share of global energy supplies. Any military or intelligence confrontation in the area could have wider implications for maritime security and regional dynamics.
