DID Press: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has accused the United States of using the global solidarity and UN support that followed the September 11, 2001 attacks to advance its geopolitical objectives and expand its presence in various regions.
In an interview with Russian outlet RBC, Lavrov said Washington used a UN resolution that paved the way for military operations and the formation of an international coalition to increase its influence.He said the approach was not limited to Afghanistan and was later repeated in Iraq and Libya.
The September 11 attacks were carried out by al-Qaeda members who hijacked four passenger planes. Two aircraft crashed into the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers in New York, causing their collapse. A third struck the Pentagon in Washington, while the fourth crashed near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
According to official figures, 2,982 people were killed in the attacks, including 2,749 in New York, 189 in Washington and 44 in Pennsylvania.The attacks marked the beginning of the U.S. war against al-Qaeda and military operations in Afghanistan.
The conflict lasted nearly two decades before the United States withdrew and the Taliban returned to power in 2021, ushering in a new period of political and humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
