US Afghanistan War Commission Meets Pakistan Army Chief

DID Press: A delegation from the U.S. Afghanistan War Commission met Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, in Rawalpindi on Monday to discuss Pakistan’s role in the Afghanistan war, regional security and developments in Afghanistan.

The delegation, led by Commission Co-Chairs Shamila N. Chaudhary and Dr. Colin F. Jackson, is reviewing the United States’ 20-year engagement in Afghanistan. Discussions covered Pakistan’s support during the conflict, the regional security environment and developments in Afghanistan relevant to the commission’s work.

Munir presented Pakistan’s perspective on the security dynamics that shaped the conflict and highlighted the challenges Pakistan faced during the prolonged war in Afghanistan. He also stressed the importance of incorporating regional perspectives and Pakistan’s experience into assessments of the conflict’s strategic, diplomatic and operational dimensions.

According to Pakistan’s military, the delegation acknowledged Pakistan’s longstanding role and sacrifices during the Afghanistan conflict and praised its continued contribution to regional peace and stability.

The U.S. Afghanistan War Commission was established by Congress in 2021 as an independent body to review U.S. decisions and actions related to the Afghanistan war from June 2001 through August 2021.
