Indian Police Detain Afghan Student Over Immigration Overstay
DID Press: Police in India’s Pimpri-Chinchwad city have begun deportation proceedings against a 26-year-old Afghan national who came to the country to pursue a master’s degree in economics but remained after the expiry of his immigration documents, Indian media reported.

The student, identified as Danyar Hussain, was located and detained on Monday, September 28, at a residential complex in Bavdhan Budruk. The operation was conducted by the Anti-Terrorism Branch (ATB) of the Pimpri-Chinchwad police in coordination with the Foreigners Registration Office (FRO) and Bavdhan police.
According to police, Hussain told investigators that he was a second-year M.A. Economics student at Modern College, Shivajinagar. Police verification, however, showed that he had not attended the college since January 2026.
Police said they examined his Afghan passport and immigration documents and found that his authorised stay had expired in January 2026 and that he had not obtained an extension. The authorities subsequently initiated legal procedures for his deportation from India.
The case is part of an operation by Pimpri-Chinchwad police to identify foreign nationals who remain in the area beyond the period authorised by their immigration documents. Police have also reminded landlords and other establishments accommodating foreign nationals of requirements to submit prescribed information to the FRO.
Important clarification: Indian media reports describe this as a deportation proceeding against one Afghan student. The available reporting does not establish that India has begun a general deportation process targeting Afghan students as a group.
