Afghan Red Crescent Says It Has Treated 32,000 Heart-Defect Patients in Herat
DID Press: Afghan Red Crescent Society in Herat says it has treated more than 32,000 patients with congenital heart defects and provided cash assistance and shelter to more than 400 families affected by floods and other natural disasters.

The organization made the announcement during its annual Special Week fundraising campaign, known as Needy Week, which aims to raise money for medical treatment and humanitarian assistance.
Gul Rahman Mohajer, an Afghan Red Crescent official in Herat, said donations collected during the campaign would be used to treat patients, support families in need and assist people affected by natural disasters.
He called on residents, businesspeople and philanthropists to contribute by purchasing fundraising tickets to help finance the organization’s medical and humanitarian programmes.
The Afghan Red Crescent has operated programmes to treat patients with congenital heart defects, particularly children, with some of the costs covered by public donations. The society launched its annual fundraising week on October 16, 2026, to support patients, vulnerable families and disaster-affected communities.
However, the Herat officials did not specify the period covered by the figure of 32,000 patients, the types of treatment provided or the amount of financial assistance distributed to disaster-affected families.
