Afghanistan Imports More Than 80% of Its Electricity Despite Vast Solar Potential
DID Press: Afghanistan imports more than 80 percent of its electricity requirements from other countries and spends over $280 million annually on electricity imports, according to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).Marking Afghanistan Energy Week, the UNDP said the country has the potential to generate more than 220 gigawatts of solar power.

Despite this capacity, however, a large proportion of Afghans still lack access to a reliable electricity supply.Afghanistan’s heavy reliance on imported electricity continues despite its considerable solar energy resources.
According to the UNDP, developing this potential could play a significant role in meeting the country’s electricity needs.
