The chief executive officer (CEO) of the National Unity Government (NUG) Abdullah Abdullah confirmed US-Taliban direct talks on Monday.
Speaking during Minister Council session on 6 August, CEO Abdullah confirmed the talks and said the NUG is aware of the issues discussed in these talks.
“there were contacts in the past and contacts have recently been made, the government of Afghanistan is aware of the issues which were held to facilitate talks with Taliban, not beyond that,” said Mr Abdullah.
Mr Abdullah dismissed news about ceding some areas to the Taliban group, saying that “any group is considered (an enemy) until it fights the government.”
It is worth mentioning that Taliban-US talks in Qatar were first disclosed in the Wall Street Journal newspaper. Then, two Taliban-affiliated sources confirmed the visit. Although the Taliban’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid rejected the visit.
Earlier, the government of Afghanistan had adopted contradictory stances against the US-Taliban direct talks.
