ARG Wants Clarification on US – Taliban Draft Deal

Afghan government has asked US for clarity over the draft agreement between its Special Envoy on Afghan peace process Zalmay Khalilzad and the Taliban.

Afghan government has asked US for clarity over the draft agreement between its Special Envoy on Afghan peace process Zalmay Khalilzad and the Taliban.
Presidential spokesperson Sediq Sediqqi said that the Afghan government has concerns about the consequences of US-Taliban peace deal and the government wants clarification on the draft.

Sediqqi said that the Afghan people want peace and the government started the peace process. “Holding Consultative Peace Loya Jirga, removing conditions for talks and last year’s ceasefire has been the practical steps the government has taken to begin the peace process,” he added.
“The Afghan government is also concerned and we, therefore, would like further clarity on this document to completely analyze its dangers and negative consequences and avoid the dangers,” he wrote on Twitter.

This comes as nine former US diplomats warned over hasty US troops withdrawal from Afghanistan, saying it will lead to a “total civil war”.
The deal, which would see around 5,000 U.S. troops withdrawn and five bases closed in exchange for guarantees that Afghanistan would not be used as a base for militant attacks on America, was presented to NUG leaders this week by Mr Khalilzad.
