Election Delay is Clear Violation of Constitution: ICOIC
The Independent Commission for Overseeing the Implementation of the Constitution (ICOIC) described, the decision taken by the independent election commission (IEC) to postpone the presidential election, as a clear violation of the Afghan constitution.
The Independent Commission for Overseeing the Implementation of the Constitution (ICOIC) described, the decision taken by the independent election commission (IEC) to postpone the presidential election, as a clear violation of the Afghan constitution.
“The IEC’s measure to delay the election is a clear violation of the constitution. It is expected from the IEC to compensate its lack of timely preparation for the elections and end the constitutional violation,” said ICOIC on Monday night.
This comes as the IEC announced in a press conference that the Afghan presidential elections scheduled for April 20 will be held with a three months delay on 20 July 2019 due to existent problems.
According to the chairman of the IEC, four elections – the presidential, provincial council, district council, and the parliamentary election for Ghazni constituency – all will be held simultaneously on 20 July.
The Afghan government, UNAMA, and the US embassy in Kabul have welcomed the delay of Afghan presidential elections.
