Afghan children from poor families having Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) in western Herat province are being freely treated in the hospitals of Islamic Republic of Iran, the provincial public health officials said.
“every week, a Herati child having heart hole is being treated free of charge at Imam Reza hospital in Mashhad,” said the chairman of Herat public health department Dr. Abdul Hakim Tamanna. “I have recently traveled to Iran with a group of Herat doctors and signed an agreement with the head of Imam Reza hospital Dr. Abdullah Bahrami,” he added.

According to Mr. Tamanna, the implementation of this plan will be carried out by the Coordinating Committee of Health Workers, and within a year, at least 48 poor children with heart holes will be deployed to Iran for cardiac surgery.
“the Loghman Hakim Hospital in Herat takes the responsibility to conduct primary and diagnostic tests in the province. Mostafa Azizi, the medical equipment company and several other companies have accepted to provide the necessary equipment for operations,” he continued.

Imam Jawad Charity Foundation accepted the responsibility of supervising and coordinating these patients in Mashhad, as well as the Charity Foundation of Ahmad Shah Faqiri in Herat, has also been responsible for the social survey of applicants.
“we plan to carry out these operations in our own soil next year after getting the necessary training,” the head of Herat public health department added.

VSD operation is costly in Afghanistan and most people having the disease in the country cannot afford to pay for treatments.
