FM Atmar Leaves for Russia
Leading a high-level delegation, Afghan Foreign Minister (FM) Mohammad Haneef Atmar departed for Russia as part of a three-day visit.
The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that at the official invitation of Russian FM Sergey Lavrov, FM Haneef Atmar will arrive in Moscow on Wednesday evening.
“The purpose of the visit is to expand bilateral relations, strengthen regional and international consensus on the Afghan peace process, and to increase cooperation in the joint fight against terrorism and organized crime in the region,” the statement read.
During his visit, Atmar is scheduled to meet with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and a number of high-ranking Russian government officials.
This comes as remarks about an interim government raised by the Taliban delegation in Moscow as well as Russia’s Special Envoy Zamir Kabulov’s statements about transitional government had angered Kabul.
